An aluminium pull bolt lock is a sliding bolt with a proper grip, built for doors that are opened by hand many times a day but still need to be shut firmly and, when needed, padlocked. It sits somewhere between a slim tower bolt and a full aldrop, and for a certain set of doors it is the most practical piece of hardware you can fit.

Those doors are usually the unglamorous ones. The store room behind the kitchen, the door to the terrace, the side door of a small shop, the gate to the overhead tank. None of them will appear in a home tour, yet each one gets used constantly and each one keeps something worth keeping. Here is what a pull bolt is, how it differs from a tower bolt, and where it earns its place.

Pull bolt vs tower bolt, the real difference

A tower bolt has a round bolt that slides inside a raised barrel, moved by a small knob or stud. You push it with a fingertip, rotate the knob down into a slot to hold it, and that is that. It is compact and neat, which is why it is used on windows, cupboards and bedroom doors.

A pull bolt is built around the hand rather than the fingertip. The bolt is usually heavier, the grip is a handle you can close your fist around, and the body is longer and wider so it can be fixed with more screws. Many pull bolt designs also carry an eye or a loop so a padlock can be passed through when the door must stay locked.

So the pull bolt vs tower bolt choice really comes down to two questions. How often will someone operate it, and does it ever need a padlock? A bolt you slide twice a day on a door that sometimes needs locking is a pull bolt job. A bolt you touch once a week on an internal door is better served by a tower bolt.

Why aluminium suits these doors

The doors that need pull bolts are often exposed. Terrace doors face direct sun and rain. Store rooms near kitchens see steam and spilt water. Shop side doors open onto dusty lanes. Mild steel bolts in these spots start showing rust spots quickly, and a rusted bolt soon becomes a stiff one.

Aluminium does not rust in the way steel does. It forms a thin protective oxide on its surface, so it copes well with damp air and occasional splashing. It is also light, which means a long bolt does not drag the door or put extra load on the screws. Anodised or coated aluminium keeps a clean look for longer, and finishes such as silver satin or gold matt sit well beside other fittings in the house.

The trade-off is that aluminium is softer than steel. For a store room or terrace door that is mostly about keeping the door shut and adding a padlock, that is rarely a problem. For a high-security entrance, you would combine the bolt with a proper lock rather than relying on the bolt alone.

Aluminium Pull Bolt Lock for Store Rooms, Terraces and Shops

A terrace door bolt that works hard

A terrace door bolt has a hard life. The door is often a tin-sheet or PVC door in a concrete frame, it takes wind loads, and it is left open on winter afternoons and shut at night. A pull bolt fitted on the inside at hand height lets anyone close it quickly, and the padlock option means it can be secured when the family is away and the roof is accessible from the next building. Fit it on the side of the door that meets the frame, and check the screws reach solid material, since many terrace doors are hollow.

Store room door lock and shop uses

For a store room door lock, the aim is usually to keep children out and keep stock or household provisions safe, without making the door a chore to open. A pull bolt with a small padlock does this simply. In joint families and PG accommodation, many people fit a pull bolt outside the store room so it can be padlocked, and a separate small bolt inside if the room is also used as a changing area.

Shops use pull bolts on back doors, on the inner side of rolling shutters at the bottom, and on stock cupboards. A row of shops in any market will show you dozens of these, usually with a padlock hanging from each one. On shutters, mount the bolt so it drops into a slot in the floor or the guide channel, which stops the shutter being lifted from outside.

Fitting an aluminium pull bolt lock so it lasts

Even a simple bolt needs a little care at fitting time. Close the door fully and hold the bolt in place before marking holes, so the bolt lines up with its keeper and does not rub. Use all the screw holes provided, because a long pull bolt with two screws missing will rock loose quickly. On metal doors, use self-tapping screws or nut and bolt fixing rather than wood screws. Once fitted, slide it a few times and add a touch of light oil if it feels gritty.

Check the padlock fit before you buy the padlock. The loop should take the shackle without forcing, and the padlock should hang clear of the door frame so it does not bang every time the door moves.
