Double doors look grand. That is why so many independent houses in Aligarh, Agra and across western UP have them on the main entrance, and why drawing rooms, puja rooms and shops use them too.

But a double door is really two doors that have to behave like one. If the latch and bolts are not set up properly, you get a door that rattles in the wind, a fixed leaf that swings open when you least expect it, and a lock that never quite lines up. The right double door latch lock setup solves all of that.

Active leaf and fixed leaf

Every double door has an active leaf, the one you open every day, and a fixed leaf, the one that usually stays shut. The fixed leaf has to be held firmly in place, or the active leaf has nothing to latch against.

This is the first thing to get right. Most problems with double doors come from a fixed leaf that is not properly bolted.

The parts that make up a good setup

On the fixed leaf, you need bolts at the top and bottom that slide into the frame and the floor. Tower bolts or flush bolts both work. Flush bolts sit inside the edge of the door and look neater. Tower bolts are surface mounted and easier to fit and reach.

On the active leaf, you need a lock body with a latch and a deadbolt, and handles on both sides. The latch catches into a keeper fixed on the edge of the fixed leaf, and the deadbolt throws into the same keeper when you lock it with the key.

For main doors, many families add an aldrop across the two leaves on the inside, for extra night security.

Why a dual door lock body helps

Some lock bodies are made specifically for double doors, with a keeper designed to fit the edge of the fixed leaf. Using one of these, rather than a single door lock adapted to a double door, gives a better fit and a cleaner finish.

Ask for a double door lock set when you buy, and tell the shop the thickness of your doors and whether the meeting edges are flat or rebated.

Common mistakes

Skipping the bottom bolt. The top bolt alone lets the bottom of the fixed leaf flex, and a push near the floor opens a gap.

Fixing the floor socket into tiles without a proper metal socket. The bolt chips the tile within months. Use a metal floor socket set into the floor.

Fitting the lock before the doors are properly hung. If the two leaves do not meet evenly, no lock will line up. Fix the hinges and the alignment first.

Forgetting the handles on the fixed leaf. Even though it stays shut, a matching dummy handle makes the door look balanced.

Double Door Latch Lock Setups for Main Doors, Drawing Rooms and Shops

Drawing room and shop doors

Drawing room and puja room double doors usually need only a latch and bolts, not a key lock. A double door latch with handles and a pair of tower or flush bolts on the fixed leaf is enough.

Shop and office double doors get heavy use and need a strong lock body, good bolts and a door closer if the door is heavy, so it shuts gently every time.

Matching the hardware

On a double door, all the hardware is on show at once. Keep the handles, bolts, aldrop and hinges in the same finish, whether that is antique brass, rose gold or satin steel. It makes a big door look planned rather than pieced together.
