In most Indian homes, the word for a cupboard depends on who is speaking. Dadi says almirah. The carpenter says kapat. The interior designer says wardrobe shutter. Everyone means the same thing, and everyone eventually asks the same question. Which handle should go on it?
A kapat handle seems like a tiny decision next to the laminate, the colour and the layout. But it is the one part of the cupboard you touch every single day, and it changes how the whole room looks.
Start with how the kapat is used
A kitchen cabinet gets opened dozens of times a day, often with wet or oily hands. A bedroom wardrobe gets opened a few times a day. A crockery unit or a puja cabinet might open once a week.
Heavy use needs a handle with a firm grip and solid fixing. Light use gives you more freedom to choose something purely for looks.
Shapes that work well
Bar handles are the most popular choice in modern kitchens and wardrobes. They are easy to grip, easy to clean and look neat in a row.
Knobs suit smaller shutters, drawers and traditional furniture. A brass knob on a wooden almirah has a classic look that never really dates.
Long handles, the kind that run most of the height of a wardrobe door, make tall shutters easier to open and give a strong vertical line that looks very current.
Profile or edge handles sit along the top or side of the shutter and almost disappear. They suit very minimal kitchens, though they are a little less comfortable for heavy daily use.
Getting the size right
A handle that is too small on a big shutter looks lost and is uncomfortable to pull. A handle that is too big on a small drawer looks clumsy.
A simple rule many carpenters follow is to keep the handle around one third the width of a drawer, and for tall wardrobe shutters, to choose a longer handle so you can reach it comfortably from different heights. When in doubt, hold a few sizes against the shutter before you decide.
Finishes that suit Indian homes
Matt black is very popular now and looks striking on light laminates and wood. Gold and rose gold finishes bring warmth and pair well with marble and warm lighting. Satin steel is the safe choice that goes with almost every colour. Antique brass suits traditional and carved furniture.
For kitchens, choose a finish that cleans easily and does not show every fingerprint. For wardrobes, you can be a little bolder.
Keep it consistent
The best looking homes usually use one handle style for the kitchen and one for the bedrooms, or even one for the whole house. Mixing five different handles in a single room makes even good furniture look patched together.
If you like variety, change the size rather than the style. A short and a long version of the same handle can look very planned.
Fitting tips
Mark the position on every shutter using a template or a piece of cardboard with the holes punched, so every handle sits at exactly the same height. Use screws of the right length for your shutter thickness, because a screw that is too long will poke through the inside, and one that is too short will pull out within months.
