Most people choose a main gate lock the same way they choose a pressure cooker. They walk into the hardware shop, point at the one that looks heavy, and hope for the best.

Weight is not a bad instinct, but it is only one part of the answer. The gate is the first thing a visitor touches and the first thing a thief tests, and the right lock depends on what the gate is made of, how it swings, and how often the family uses it in a day. Once you know the main gate lock types available, the choice gets much easier.

The aldrop, still the most common choice

Walk down almost any lane in Aligarh, Agra or Mathura and you will see an aldrop on half the gates. It is a sliding bar fixed on one leaf that drops into a hasp on the other, and you secure it with a padlock.

Its strength is simplicity. There is no internal mechanism to jam, it works in dust and rain, and anyone in the family can use it without a lesson. Its weakness is that the security depends almost entirely on the padlock and on how thick the bar and the fixing screws are. A thin aldrop with a good padlock is still a thin aldrop.

If you go this route, look for a solid bar, a hasp that sits flush with the gate, and screws that go through the frame rather than just the sheet.

Padlocks, the partner that matters more than you think

A padlock is not really a gate lock on its own, but on most Indian gates it does the heavy lifting. The shackle is what a cutter goes for, so a thicker, hardened shackle buys you real time.

Pick one with a shrouded or close shackle if you can, because it leaves less metal exposed for a tool to grip. And please retire the rusty one your grandfather bought in 1998. It has done its job.

Mortise locks for gates that get used all day

A mortise lock sits inside a pocket cut into the gate frame, with a handle on both sides and a key from outside. It is common on wooden gates and on iron gates that have a box section deep enough to hold the lock body.

This is the right type when the gate opens many times a day, for school runs, milk delivery, the car going in and out. You turn the handle instead of fiddling with a padlock every time, and you lock it with a key only at night. A multi-lever lock body gives a good balance of security and smooth daily use.

Rim locks and night latches for smaller gates

A rim lock is fixed on the surface of the gate rather than inside it, which makes it easier to fit on a gate that was never designed for a mortise pocket. Many families use one on a side gate or a terrace gate, where the traffic is lower and the main need is a reliable click shut.

They are quick to install and easy to replace, but check that the keeper on the other side is fixed into solid metal, not just tack welded on the surface.

Which gate lock types suit which gate

For a heavy iron double gate on an independent house, an aldrop with a strong padlock for the night, plus a tower bolt at the top and bottom of the fixed leaf, is still very hard to beat. For a wooden gate or a compound gate used all day, a mortise lock with a handle saves time and wear. For a small side or terrace gate, a rim lock or a simple latch with a padlock is enough.

Many homes end up with two locks on the main gate, one for convenience in the day and one for real security at night. That is not overkill. It is just matching the lock to the moment.

A few checks before you pay

Open and close the gate a few times and watch whether the two leaves meet evenly. A sagging gate will fight any lock you fit. Fix the hinges first.

Check the finish. Gates live outdoors, so a coating that resists rust matters more here than on any bedroom door. And keep a spare key somewhere outside the house, with a neighbour or relative you trust, because a jammed gate lock at eleven at night is an experience nobody needs twice.
